Electra

performance, 17’ - 2007/2017

Créé pour une première représentation à New York, Electra fait référence à la figure mythologique d’Électre, mais aussi à l’opéra et à la musique électronique. Les cheveux blancs, au centre de la scène, je bouge mes bras telle une diva automate, tourne mon regard vers le ciel, et m’enflamme. Mon costume lumineux accompagne ma narration étrange et dramatique, à l’image d’un rêve éveillé.

J’ai confectionné différents bijoux avec du fil électrique et des LED blanches, ainsi qu’une longue robe pyramidale en satin ornée des mêmes LED. Ces accessoires s’illuminent en fonction de ma partition, ils sont commandés un à un, en direct et à distance, par mon assistant. L’éclairage de la robe est divisé en trois zones qui clignotent en suivant mon chant. 

I stand in the middle of the stage like an automated diva, moving my arms and turning my face to the sky. I sing out loud and let my luminous costume express itself. The story I tell is one full of associations about life and death and fear: a waking dream or a black and white nightmare. 

Especially written for a premiere in New York, Electra refers to the mythological figure of the same name, to electronic music, to science fiction and to opera. The piece is inspired by Metropolis (Fritz Lang), Robot Dreams (Isaac Asimov,) and Big Science (Laurie Anderson.)

For this musical and visual composition, I wear a long pyramidal satin dress and jewelry (a ring, a bracelet, a necklace, and a crown) decorated with LED lights that can react alternately to my words and to my actions. These accessories are remote-controlled, live and one by one, by my assistant.
